GOVERNMENT COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, PUDUKKOTTAI
I. BASIC INFORMATION AND THE ELIGIBILITY OF THE COLLEGE
Government College of Education, Pudukkottai was started based on the Tamil Nadu state government order No.1117 in the year 1955. This was initially accommodated in a building of a government high school, later a separate building was constructed and this college has been functioning in this new building from 7th October 1964.
This college was affiliated to Madras University since its inception and in 1978 when Bharathidasan University was started after bifurcated from Madras University, this college has become as permanent affiliated college of Bharathidasan University, Trichy which was approved by the University Grant Commission, New Delhi.
II. CURRICULUM
This single faculty college is offering one year bachelor degree course (B.Ed.) in Teacher Education following the syllabus designed by Bharathidasan University, Trichy and approved by the National Council for Teacher Education, New Delhi.
The college is offering both Pre-service Training as well as In-service Training in Teacher Education. Under pre-service training (B.Ed. Degree Course) the college is offering the following optional subjects.
1. Tamil Language Teaching
2. English Language Teaching
3. History Teaching
4. Mathematics Teaching
5. Physical Science Education
6. Biological Science Education
The annual intake of the students for pre-service course (B.Ed) is 120.
Besides, this college has been identified one of the potential centres by the state government to provide In-service training for post-graduate and graduate teachers in southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
In the year 1997-98 it conducted more than 20 In-service training programmes, for post-graduate teachers and graduate teachers of southern districts of Tamil Nadu in the following areas :
- modern class room management
- improved teaching methods and techniques
- science education and
- educational technology
